Dear sirs, I have a potential client that I could work for direct. Does anybody have any pointers on working direct? For example, limted or sole trader? What kind of contract would be drawn up between myself and the client? Are there any other things to look out for? Many thanks Chris

I'm just going contract for an individual company and am going to see DASA who work as an umbrella company for you - if you google them they'll appear. I'm going to see them on Monday so can't recommend them as I haven't tried them yet but it looks an interesting way of doing it.

Thanks Gordon. I might give that a whirl. I was wondering if there where any standard contracts that could be drawn up between contractor and client. Or, is it better to find an agent who will handle the contractual side of things for a fee.

Be very wary of umbrella companies, working on contract through them provides very few benefits thanks to HMRC. Google PCG (Professional Contractors Group), they have good contract advice. Speak to an accountant, he won't tell you which route to take but he'll give you the pro's and cons.

The Business Link website is excellent (they also provide phone advice, free courses etc.) and covers all the important stuff to consider when setting up, including info to help you decide the best structure to meet your needs.
